France has moved a step closer to modernizing its undersea fleet as Naval Group commenced sea trials of De Grasse, the fourth submarine in the Barracuda program. The trials will evaluate propulsion, combat systems, and operational performance ahead of its expected commissioning in 2026. Designed to succeed the Rubis-class boats, the Barracuda fleet introduces enhanced stealth, endurance, and multi-mission strike capabilities. Equipped with a nuclear propulsion system and advanced weapon suites, the submarines are central to Paris’ long-term naval deterrence and power-projection strategy through 2030 and beyond.
