The US Army has demonstrated a new counter-UAS capability by live-testing the XM1225 proximity-fused round from an AH-64 Apache helicopter. Fired from the aircraft’s M230 Chain Gun, the 30×113mm munition was assessed against airborne targets to compare performance with the long-serving M789 HEDP round. Officials reported the XM1225 satisfied accuracy standards and expanded engagement flexibility. The proximity-fuse allows detonation near aerial threats, increasing effectiveness against drones and dispersed targets. Managed by the Product Manager Medium Caliber Ammunition and developed in coordination with DEVCOM and Northrop Grumman, the system can be fielded without hardware changes, accelerating operational deployment.
