The U.S. Army has placed an order for 86 M917A3 heavy dump trucks from Mack Defense, advancing a program to modernize the service’s engineering and logistics vehicle fleet. Based on Mack’s Granite commercial platform but modified to military specifications, the M917A3 incorporates a reinforced chassis, upgraded suspension, all-wheel drive and optional armor in the cab to operate effectively in rough terrain and higher-threat environments. Each truck can transport approximately 27 tons, enabling high-volume hauling for tasks such as base construction, earthmoving, and recovery operations. The procurement is part of a broader recapitalization aimed at replacing antiquated heavy dump trucks with contemporary vehicles that reduce maintenance costs, improve payload efficiency and deliver better off-road performance. Mack Defense emphasized domestic production using an existing supplier base, aligning with DoD priorities on secure supply chains and industrial capacity. The commercial-derived approach also promotes parts commonality and simplified logistics compared with legacy military-only platforms. This order dovetails with wider modernization initiatives across the services, which include digitization of vehicle controls, enhanced payload management and experimentation with hybrid-electric solutions under other tactical truck programs. For combat engineers and logistics formations, newer heavy dump trucks promise more reliable hauling capability and faster turnaround times for infrastructure projects in forward areas. Ultimately, the Mack contract strengthens the Army’s ability to build and sustain expeditionary sites and reduces lifecycle burdens through the adoption of modern, maintainable platforms manufactured domestically.
