Australia has announced an initial investment of AUD 3.9 billion ($2.8 billion) to support construction of a nuclear submarine facility under the AUKUS partnership with the United States and the United Kingdom. The funding will establish infrastructure at Osborne near Adelaide, forming the backbone of Australia’s future nuclear-powered submarine capability. The broader program could cost up to AUD 235 billion over three decades and includes the purchase of US submarines beginning in 2032, alongside technology transfers enabling domestic production. Long-term spending at the facility is projected to reach AUD 30 billion, with additional investments planned for submarine maintenance infrastructure in Western Australia.
