Saab has finalized a new production phase contract valued at 9.6 billion Swedish kronor ($1 billion) with the Swedish government to complete its two Blekinge-class submarines, a vital component of the country’s modernization program. Scheduled for delivery through 2032, the submarines incorporate advanced features enabling autonomous operations, extended range, and compatibility with future unmanned platforms. Each A26 measures 66.1 meters in length and features a displacement of 1,925 tons, optimized for stealth and endurance. Its Multi-Mission Portal serves as a launch bay for uncrewed underwater vehicles, divers, and specialized payloads, significantly broadening mission versatility. Powered by diesel and Stirling engines, the submarines can operate for prolonged periods submerged with minimal acoustic signatures. The A26 integrates intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance systems for independent or cooperative missions with other uncrewed assets. Saab emphasized that the program enhances Sweden’s underwater defense capabilities while fostering local innovation in naval technologies. Once commissioned, the A26 class is expected to be one of the most advanced diesel-electric submarines globally, offering flexible deployment across NATO-aligned maritime security missions.
